In Dave Haywood and Kaleigh Cancetty BA(Hons)'s The Darktouched, the first book in The Darkness Rises series, humanity is a relic of the past. Aberrant races now rule a fractured world, some striving for peace, others for domination. At the heart of this precarious balance stands Elara, a solitary elf druid. Possessing the unique ability to bridge the chasm between the forces of light and shadow, Elara faces a monumental task: maintaining the fragile peace between warring factions. Failure will plunge the world back into chaos, leaving the delicate equilibrium shattered and the future uncertain. This dark fantasy epic plunges readers into a richly imagined world of political intrigue, magical prowess, and the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Review The Darktouched
Wow, "The Darktouched" completely blew me away! From the very first page, I was hooked. Haywood and Cancetty have crafted a world so richly detailed and imaginative that I felt completely immersed in it. The premise itself – a post-apocalyptic world ruled by diverse aberrant races, held precariously together by a single elf druid – is captivating, and the execution is even better.
What truly sets this book apart is the sheer depth of the characters. Each one felt incredibly real, with their own motivations, flaws, and strengths. I found myself deeply invested in their journeys, experiencing a whole spectrum of emotions alongside them – excitement, fear, anger, joy, and even heartbreak. The authors have a remarkable ability to make you care deeply about these individuals, even when they're making questionable choices. The multi-POV structure worked brilliantly, giving us unique insights into the lives and perspectives of several key characters, creating a complex tapestry of relationships and alliances.
The world-building is equally impressive. The authors clearly poured a tremendous amount of thought and creativity into constructing this unique post-human world. The descriptions are vivid and evocative, painting breathtaking pictures in your mind. The inclusion of talking pirate otters (yes, you read that right!) added a touch of delightful whimsy that perfectly balanced the darker, more serious elements of the story. I particularly appreciated the attention to detail, the consistency of the world's rules and the way even the minor characters felt well-developed and significant to the overall narrative.
Beyond the compelling narrative and well-developed characters, the book also boasts gorgeous artwork. The illustrations are stunning, enhancing the reading experience and adding another layer of visual appeal. The inclusion of a soundtrack further amplifies this immersive experience, perfectly complementing the mood and tone of different sections. Listening to the recommended tracks alongside reading heightened the emotional impact for me, significantly deepening my connection to the story and its characters.
Several reviewers mentioned the option of reading the book in different ways, focusing on a single character's perspective at a time, then cycling through the others. This added flexibility is a fantastic touch, allowing readers to personalize their experience and fully engage with their favourite character's journey before exploring others. The only minor quibble, as one reader noted, is the lack of page numbers, but it's a small price to pay for such an incredible story.
"The Darktouched" isn't just a fantasy novel; it's an emotional rollercoaster. It's a testament to powerful storytelling, captivating world-building, and unforgettable characters. It has action, romance, suspense, humor, and a heartwarming core. It's a truly remarkable debut in the fantasy genre and I, like so many others, am eagerly anticipating the next installment in "The Darkness Rises" series. This is a book I'll be recommending to everyone I know, particularly fellow fantasy enthusiasts and those looking for something new and refreshing. Five stars isn't enough – this book deserves a six!
